The story of Wine Art Estate dates back to 1993 when civil engineer Yiannis Papadopoulos revived an old family vineyard in Mikrochori, near Drama in Northern Greece. At the time this was just a hobby, satisfying Yiannis’s personal enthusiasm and interest in the subject. Two years later his friend Yiannis Kalaitzidis, an architectural engineer, joined the venture. The two men founded ‘Wine Art Estate’ and by being engineers they built their own winery in the village of Microchori.
Bordeaux-trained chemist and oenologist Akis Papadopoulos, son of Yiannis Papadopoulos, is in charge of winemaking since 2009. Wine Art Estate aims to showcase the ideal weather conditions and mesoclimate of Drama towards producing excellent wines from both Greek and international grape varieties. ‘Plano Malagouzia’ and ‘Plano Assyrtiko’ are two delicious tank-fermented varietal versions of two star Greek varieties. ‘Techni Alypias white’ ideally uses the classic white blend of Drama: Sauvignon Blanc with Assyrtiko, while Techni Alypias red is a juicy red blend of Agiorgitiko with Cabernet Sauvignon. The best wines come under the name ‘Idisma Drios’: a single-varietal range of oak-femented wines: Idisma Drios Chardonnay, Idisma Drios Assyrtiko and Idisma Drios Merlot.
