Lacules Estate is located right above the bay of Lacules, a small beach on the southwest shore of the Peloponnese peninsula on the Gulf of Messinia in Southern Greece.
Inspired by the deep-rooted tradition in Greece, one of the oldest wine-production regions in the world, Austrian Friedrich Gruber planted vines around his holiday home, nestled close to ancient olive trees. With the support and guidance of friends who are also winery owners, the first vintages were born. For the past ten years, production has been limited to family and close friends, to better learn of the intricacies of the special terroir of the Lacules Bay. Involving Friedrich’s daughter, Barbara – who also shares a deep passion for fine wine – has assured Lacules is a family affair. Barbara’s business background and newfound fondness for winemaking prompted the decision to take this hobby to the next level: a professional wine production venture. The vines are planted around the house, next to ancient olive trees and are laid out in terraces overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The clones of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon originate from France and were selected to suit the warm climate with relatively low humidity. Cluster thinning and the well-drained soils produce a low yielding crop with concentrated fruit that is then carefully picked by hand.
